Happy New Year to all bowlers throughout the Costa Blanca. Let’s hope 2008 brings good health and prosperity to all and, as far as Albir is concerned a hoard of trophies for the club and individual players alike! Whenever you step onto the green remind yourself how lucky we all are to be living over here, playing this fantastic sport under warming blue skies.

The 1car1.com sponsored Albir Christmas Pairs signed-off 2007 in style. Held over the 26th & 27th Albir was delighted to welcome twenty-eight pairings including teams from Javea, El Cid, B.B.C., San Miguel & La Marina. The format was two-woods with each match being played over eight ends. As well as enjoying the usual excellent camaraderie the teams were competing for a prize fund of €350 euros.  

The group winners, qualifying for the semi-finals, were John & Dot North and Eileen Whitmore/Ken Bainbridge, both from Albir, Jan & Alan Phillips (Javea) and June Mountford/Bob Foley (El Cid). Perhaps the greatest enjoyment to be had was seeing Dot North bowling again. And not just bowling, but showing much the same skill and determination that saw her win six Spanish National Championships just a few years ago.  

Unfortunately for Dot & John they lost to Jan & Alan Phillips in their semi. In the last end with the scores equal the bowling was sublime and the jack was moved constantly by precision drawing. But the win went to Alan & Jan though there could hardly be any bad-feeling since John & Alan will be teaming up for the International Triples at Albir in April. In the other semi, the home team of Eileen Whitmore & Ken Bainbridge had a good win against June Mountford & Bob Foley to reach the final.  

Now you’d think that with home advantage, a partisan crowd and nearly 150 years (sorry guys) of life experience between them Eileen & Ken would sweep away their whippersnapper opponents in style. But Jan & Alan were bowling very well and deservedly took the silverware and winners cheque. And no-one will complain at that as they are one of the friendliest couples you’ll meet in the Costa Blanca.
