1car1 Open at Greenlands - September 2007

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

1car1, the UK car and van rental company, were the sponsors of the Greenlands Open Triples played on 24th – 26th September. A full entry of 24 teams was divided into groups of 6 with the winners of each group progressing to the 12 end semi finals. Greenlands were guaranteed a finalist as two of their teams met in one semi, while Quesada’s representatives took on a mixture of players from San Miguel and Albir. This was possible because Greenlands tournaments are always truly open, unlike most other clubs, with players from any Spanish club able to combine if they wish and there is no requirement for teams to be of mixed sex.

The now familiar figures of Matt Carter and Rob Gillespie from 1car1 were on hand to see the action and present the prizes when it was all done and dusted. Hilda Cork, the tournament organiser, thanked 1car1 for their support while also thanking all the players, officials and the staff at Greenlands for making the event a success.

Back to the action, wher the semi final between the two teams from Greenlands, skipped respectively by Angie Goodfellow and Pete Bonsor (a.k.a. Little and Large) put on an absolute thriller which was not decided until the very last wood. Pete’s team had looked unstoppable in the early stages and led by 9 – 0 after 7 ends. Angie’s side staged a fighting comeback over the next 4 ends to go into the last just one shot behind at 9 – 8. The advantage changed hands with almost every wood but finally it was down to the skips and when faced with being shots down, Pete drew the shot himself. Not to be outdone, Angie played a pefect trail on the jack which gave her team a count of 3, whereupon Pete delivered the coup de gras with the last wood, sliding off his own bowl to sit on the jack and win the game..

The other semi was not so close, as the Quesada team led by Jason Prokopowycz built themselves a useful lead of 8 -1 after 5 ends. Dominic Mill’s side were unable to counter this offensive, although they made the score respectable come the end, finally going down by the score of 17 – 10.

In the final, Pete’s team again started well and led 8 – 1 after 6 ends, but this time there was no let up and they powered through the ends to score heavily and offer Jason’s team no way back into the contest. It was just one game too many for the Quesada team and they graciously conceded with two ends to go.
