1car1 Open at Quesada
Sixteen teams and many spectators enjoyed two days of excellent bowling last weekend. In the opening match of the group stage June and Keith Jones had to call on their reserves to claw back an early lead of 9-4 by the Quesada pair of Sheila and Mike Cox and eventually had to settle for a tie.

Two good wins by June and Keith then saw them through to the semi-finals by a single point. Dominic Mills and Mick Johnson had almost booked their place in the semis before losing their final game to the in form Ann and John Rudkin but still topped their group on shot difference.
Carol and Len Rudge had a smooth run in their group winning all three games to go through by two clear points. A similar story in the final group as the home pair of Deidre Leeming and Jason Prokopowycz took maximum points from their games. Both semi-finals followed a similar pattern. Carol and Len took an early 6-1 lead against Deidre and Jason until losing three consecutive ends giving up ten shots and then found their opponents in no mood to let them back into the game. Result 16-8.
The other semi produced what most people considered the best match of the competition. By the halfway stage Dominic and Mick had built up a 10-4 lead even though all four players were producing some excellent accurate bowling.
June and Keith then fought back with a mixture of superb draw bowling and the occasional ‘power play’ by Keith to go one shot in front by the penultimate end. Still the match had a final turn with Dominic and Mick holding two shots for the match until Keith produced the ‘coup de grace’ to take the last end by a single shot and the match 13-11.
The final, played over twelve ends, produced a tight encounter between Deidre and Jason, June and Keith. Single shots scored by both teams over the first five ends put June and Keith 4-1 up and then a further two shots took them to 6-1.
The Quesada pair took the next two ends by three shots to get within two only then to drop five on the ninth end. Even then it took an excellent conversion shot by Keith to save three shots on the next end and they finally killed off the game 15-4 on the eleventh end.
Many thanks to all the players, spectators and especially our sponsor’s 1car1.com.
