1car1 Open at the Emerald Isle - March 2007

Monday, March 5th, 2007

The latest in the round of Open tournaments took place at the Emerald Isle, in the form of a mixed fours competition, sponsored by 1CAR1 (Car & Van Rental). A total of 32 teams took part in the round robin stage, which due to the peculiarities of the format were whittled down to only two, who met in the final on day 3.Bad luck to the two teams who performed extremely well to finish joint third, namely Eric Slater, Pat Coffey, Ann Horswell and Maurice Horswell (Emerald Isle) and their club mates Ann Holland, Reg Fooks, Campbell Stewart and Ray Pollock. Another two home sides were pitted against each other in the 10 end final, which was a very close affair up until the sixth end, when Keith Jones’ four led 7 – 5. Despite some quality play by Brian Duff’s side, they were unable to score again as their opponents just outdid them on each end and went into the last end 6 shots behind.

Rob & Matt With The Runners Up

A valiant effort saw them pick up 4, not quite enough but an exciting end to a really well contested final which brought out plenty of oohs and aahs from the large contingent of spectators.

The 1CAR1 representatives Matt Carter and Robert Gillespie presented the prizes. Club president Tom Dalgleish thanked them for their generous support, as well as expressing his gratitude to the tournament organisers, their helpers and the umpires, who all contributed to the smooth running of the event. For 1CAR1, this was their first venture into sponsorship of a bowls event, but will not be the last as they expand their services in Spain.
