1car1 - Vega Baja Premier Golf League Inter Society Day - May 2008
The annual inter-society day was upon us again and we thought we had to do something different this year, So it was decided we should try and raise some money for charity.

The charity chosen was the The Kidney Transplant Foundation @ Addenbrooke’s Hospital due to it being the place where Ivie Davies (Secretary of the VBPGL) visited on a regular basis in 2007 with help of a 1car1 hire vehicle whilst his wife was undergoing a transplant operation for her son.
The day was sponsored by 1CAR1 and supported by El Plantio Golf, Nike Golf and GolfUSA these including raffle prizes of a soccer ball authenticated and signed by the Manchester Untied team, a Ray Clemence Classic Golf Tournament signed photo programme, plus Hi5 Pro Tour jackets made this a day to savour as the end of season tournament.
There was a demonstration of the new golf transport SEGWAY Golf, which you have to see to appreciate what could be coming your way.

Despite the storms the day before the course was in really good condition and a shot gun start got all 78 players off the tees, and with plenty of prizes the enthusiasm was high.
On the 9th Par 3 Hole was The Million Dollar Hole in One Challenge, which for the benefit of the players was part of the tournament. Unfortunately no one got the illusive prize, but quite a few received either a box of balls or a golf cap.

Some of the teams were looking to salvage some pride from either a mediocre season and so it was with a great deal of enthusiasm that the first balls were struck.
On the collection of the individual’s scorecard each player received a sleeve of the latest Nike Golf balls.
So it was tee off time and utilising a shot gun start ensured that all the players came in more or less at the same time to sit down to an excellent three course meal, (the starters had three courses alone). There were some really good individual scores which were:
Chris Tudor – San Javier G S 36 points
Bill Martin – Eurogolf G S 36 points
Terry Lewis - - Eurogolf G S 37 points
Tor Brantsaeter – Terra Mitica G S 38 points
Robin Fish – La Manga North G S 39 points
Thomas Meehan – Rocajuna G S 40 points
Ian Henderson – Greenlands G S 41 points
Peter Westwater – Rocajuna G S 42 points
The prize giving was done by Rob Gillespie of 1CAR1 and announced by VBPGL Treasurer Ron Nicholson.

Hole 7: Chris Marshall – Lunes G S - Hole 9: Clive Baker – Eurogolf G S
Hole 14: Terry Koster – Eurogolf G S - Hole 18: Nigel Goude - San Miguel G S
Longest Drive
Hole 4: Dave Curtis – Eurogolf G S Hole 15: Chris Dooney – Los Cabelleros G S
Both these drives were monster, so the prizes of Cleveland Wedges, courtesy of GolfUSA were quite apt, as their long game was well in order.

Tor Brantsaeter – Terra Mitica G S
Best Lady – Green Fee Vouchers for El Plantio Golf

So it came down to the team presentations and it showed that team spirit comes to the fore (no pun intended) Eurogolf who wanted to get some revenge for be relegated to the “C” Division in 2007 and were the “C” Division Champions, went on to show it was no fluke by winning the1CAR1 Inter Society Day Trophy from La Manga North G S, Brides maids again, who were runners up in the “A” Division this season.
1st: Eurogolf G S 208 points 2nd: La Manga South G S 198 points
So congratulations Eurogolf team for a having won the Inter Society Trophy but also being the Champions of the “C” Division and being promoted. It shows that the format being played by the Vega Baja Premier Golf League is a system that promotes a team spirit and performance, as they averaged 34.6 points per player. La Manga also provided a great team effort by averaging 33 points per player.

The raffle of all the high profile items of Manchester Untied signed football, Ray Clemence (ex England Goal keeper and England coach) signed shirts, and programmes, Golf Travel Bag from GolfUSA, and Hi5 Tour Jackets plus other items raised 1065 Euros, which 1car1 will present to Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge. In aid of the Kidney Transplant Foundation.

Well the curtain has slowly been drawn on the season and what an excellent season it has been with many close and fair battles and the Inter Society Day was the crowning glory, it was an excellent day thoroughly enjoyed, by everyone without exception, a super day.
A professional photographer Ken Nicol was there to record the day and the pictures will be on a website in the near future for the players to download and print .
A big thanks to El Plantio staff both golf and catering, for the service and support, our sponsors 1CAR1, GolfUSA, Nike Golf for making it a day to remember. We now move on to our Gala Dinner Dance at La Perdiz at San Javier on 31st May. We are already looking forward to the 2008/09 season and if it s half as good as this past season we are in for a cracker, Thanks are also extended to The Coastrider, U3A Javea, Ramon Howard Of Viva Magazine and Gary Funnell Of Digital Info Systems for their generous donations.
