1car1 - Vega Baja Premier Golf League Inter Society Day - May 2007

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

Rob Gillespie At La Torre

The curtain finally falls on the end of season Vega Baja Premier League with the Inter Society day at the Polaris World Golf Resort – La Torre. According to our choral ‘Diva’ the Fat Lady, she finally ceased singing and not a moment to soon. For her and the players it has been a long season running form the beginning of September with a victorious win in the Garay Cup to this end of season gathering. Polaris World Golf handed the course over for the day to the Vega Baja Premier Golf League as they had 152 players in the tournament, which was kindly sponsored by the UK Car Hire Company 1CAR1.
There were drinks and fresh fruit at the halfway point in front of the glorious clubhouse; marshals’ even took out cartons of Orange for the players. To add to the excitement all the competitors had the opportunity to win a trip the Las Vegas if they achieved a “Hole in One” with Million Dollar Hole in One Challenge on the 9th hole. Even if they did not achieve this mighty fete, they got a prize for trying. The day was completed with a buffet and copious beer and wine before the presentations. The competition itself was a team event with eight players representing their respective Societies and with only six scores counting everybody had to try and get the points in. There were also four Nearest the Pin prizes, plus a weeks free car hire for the best individual score. Not even a squally shower and high winds mid way through the day dampened the players spirits and the sun came out again to make it a fitting finale for the League.

It was interesting that the draw through up the Champions of the “A” Division – Benijofar against the Champions of the “B” Division La Zenia, although it was just a friendly game Benijofar scored more points. Days like this throw up some quirky results and the forever the bridesmaids, Katie Reilly Golf Society, finally threw the veil away and the mantle and became the bride (or should it be groom?) narrowly defeating Benijofar by just four points, which as you can imagine required a re-count when a Sir Terry Wogan Eurovision style, announcement was made.

If it had not been for Robin Easton of Benijofar who scored a whopping 40 points and now plays from a new handicap of 13.4, there would have been no need of a re-count.  But Robin can be assured of a car to for a week in the UK to ease the pain of a cut.

A Hopeful Nearest The Pin Effort

Highest Individual Score: Robin Easton – Benijofar G S 40 points. Nearest The Pins Hole 3: Bernie Osbourne – Los Amigos G S Hole 5: Lew Joss – Eurogolf G S Hole 11: Steve Branson – Katie Reilly G S Hole 15: Les Yates – San Miguel G S So that’s it for this season, if next season is half as exciting a close then it can only be good for competitive golf on the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida.

There are going to be three divisions next year with just eight teams in each. A big thank you on the day should go to La Torre Golf resort for their support in allowing us the whole golf resort facilities for the day and the way all of the Polaris Staff assisted us, the same thanks goes to all the Secretaries, Captains and players for their continued untiring support throughout the season which had its ups and downs.

Also, big thanks must go to Ron Nicholson for his diligent collecting and analysing the scores at each match all season.  Last but by no means least a thank you to our years sponsors Costa Blanca News for their continued support, and to Matt Carter and Rob Gillespie of 1CAR1, for their personal and companies support for the Inter Society day. The final event for the League season is the non playing one of the Annual Presentation Dinner Dance at La Perdiz – San Javier on Saturday 2nd June, it is then that all the trophies will be presented, I’m sure a good night will be had by all those attending. So here’s to a new era in 2007/08, which will be another phase in the growing success of the Vega Baja Premier Golf League.

So all you golfers and golf widows/widowers have a good relaxing summer and don’t forget to practice ready for the new season you could be next year’s champions. You will also be able to see updated Vega Baja Premier Golf League fixtures, tables, and news on the website www.clubmurcia.com throughout the season.
