Campoverde Golf Society Presidents Cup - Dinner & Dance

Friday, October 26th, 2007

This event was scheduled to be a Prize-Giving Dinner/Dance for the annually presented President’s Cup, but unfortunately the Costa Blanca weather decided to play a hand in the proceedings. Campoverde Golf Society has historically enjoyed a rich vein of luck with the weather on our golfing days, but this luck has deserted us twice recently, including our President’s Cup competition day at Roda on 18 October.

Seventy four members and guests had signed up to play, but things certainly did not look promising, as it had been raining quite hard during the previous night. Ever the optimists, the early starters teed off at 8.30 with only a slight drizzle and a light breeze to contend with. Sadly the conditions soon deteriorated and we were hit by heavy rain and very strong winds – I suppose we should have been grateful that there was no lightning!

Some of the early starters did manage to complete their rounds, but by 2.30 the conditions were so bad that the game had to be abandoned with everyone feeling distinctly wet and miserable – apparently one individual (no names no pack-drill) had to ‘wring-out’ his underpants! Not to worry, we all lived to fight another day and we now plan to hold the President’s Cup on the 19 November, again at Roda thanks to the efforts of Pablo Riestra, Director of Golf, and our Committee members, particularly our President Frank Wigley who is renowned for his powers of persuasion.

Undaunted by the fact that the golf had been a wash-out, 127 members, guests and partners turned out for an evening of wine, good food, a cabaret in the form of a Flamenco dancing exhibition, and music from Brendan’s disco. This was once again held at the Rebate Restaurant, a very popular venue with our Society. It proved to be a very good choice and early feedback indicated that the great majority enjoyed an excellent meal, with a good variety of well presented food. We were also very well looked after by the very friendly staff, some of whom we have got to know quite well over the past few years.

Flamenco Dancers.

After the meal, we were entertained by a pair of Flamenco dancers, Paqui Samper & Antonio who perform under the stage name of “Al Andaluz”. They provided a superb exhibition of this uniquely Spanish tradition. I think we have all heard of ‘quick change’ artists, but this pair had it off to a fine art. After they completed their act, the dancers persuaded a number of the audience to join them on the floor, including our versatile ‘capitano’, Alan Gregory – olé señor! During the course of the evening we held two raffles in aid of the AECC, the main Cancer Charity here in Spain, and thanks to the generosity of members and gusts, made a surprising sum of €905.

The prize in the first raffle was a voucher very kindly donated by the car hire company 1car1.com, and this raised €400 for the charity. It was won by Mike Baker. The second raffle was for a variety of smaller prizes, but included a magnum of champagne very generously donated by Andres of the Rebate Restaurant. This raised €505 for the charity. The champagne was won by Malcolm Vincent, last year’s President’s Cup champion. A special vote of thanks must go to all those involved in the organisation for this year’s event, Brendan for the disco, the Flamenco dancers Paqui & Antonio, and also to Andres and his staff for a very memorable evening. Also a big thank-you to Jackie, Denise and Frank for persuading us to part with our money for the raffle. And last but not least, a big vote of thanks also to our Captain and his Committee, for their sterling efforts in organising this excellent event.
