San Javier Golf Society Captain’s Day - May 2006

Monday, May 8th, 2006

What a fantastic day it was when, San Javier Golf Society celebrated Captains Day at Hacienda del Alamo, after days of cloud and rain, the sun came out and with a gentle breeze it was perfect for golf. Captain Alex McLennan welcomed over 80 members and guests to play a Medal Competition for the low handicappers, a Stableford for the over 18 handicappers and a Ladies High Handicap competition on the Academy Course. <삅♴䖋诼ᡈ燿(ၵsᱰ䶋儈䇨?㯿࿃濾>With so many players we had two start times on the first and tenth tees and with Alex not playing in his own competition it was a very welcoming sight to see him and Ann on the tenth handing out cold drinks and fruit to keep us going. Invited guests were Billy Sim, Director of Golf at Hacienda, who unfortunately was called away on important business minutes before we arrived. Mike Maloney, Head of Golf at the new Roda Golf Course near Los Alcazares, who came along and played, representing our sponsor on the day, Phil Davies of 1car1 who also played. Both said they thoroughly enjoyed the day, if not the golf. The course was looking very green although hollow tinning of the front nine greens last week had left them a bit bumpy but the back nine were perfect. With the weather perfect, as it always seems to be when we play at Hacienda, we looked like we were in for some good scores.

There were 20 players in the Medal competition with our lowest handicapper, Alan Masters off 4 and another six players off 10 and below. The scoring was very good with the winner Neil Robinson having a net 70, 2 under par, playing off 7. After the game Neil said he didn’t think he had played particularly well as he was feeling the effects of a very late night, however, he was two shots ahead of second place Ashley Bates who shot a net 72 off 13. Third place was Alan Masters who finished with a net 74, just two over, his excuse for not winning was that he doesn’t like the course but because it was captains´ day he did his best. Congratulations to all three for outstanding scoring. Other scores of note were Roger Mylchreest, Mike Barker and David Barnes all on net 75.

The Stableford competition was not categorised and therefore handicaps ranged from 18 to 40 (including the slope), it was a large field so the scores would be varied and they were. The winner was Keith Powell with 38 points playing off 29 “for the last time” our handicap secretary was heard to say. Second place went to Alan Ross with 37 points off 26 and 3rd to Geoff Green with 36 points off 21. Very well done by all three players. Two other scores worth a mention were Brian Kettle and Graham Haywood with 34 points.

There was a best ladies prize on the day and this went to Maria Mylchreest who had the highest score among the seven ladies playing in the Stableford competition. There were 4 nearest the pins and the longest drive went to Mick Barker who I played with and his drive was only inches in front of John Roberts who is a good 30 years his senior!

There were eight ladies playing on the academy course and the winner was Lyn Gallard by only 1 shot from Margaret McBride in second place.

The presentation of prizes took place at the Captains Dinner at La Perdiz Restaurant on Saturday evening. There was a marvellous turnout for this event and Alex dressed in his highland regalia hosted the evening. The prizes for the Captains Day were presented by Ann McLennan wife of the captain and further prizes of the Winter and Summer Knockout trophies were presented by sponsors Hazel and Maurice of Alhambra Villas. A big thank you goes to them for their continued support of the Society in these two events. There was a raffle during the evening which contained many prizes donated by members of the society and quick thank you to some of them including Matt and Nicky Hood of Buddy’s Bar, Neil Robinson and Nike Hovell of Orihuela Golf Specialist and Ian Earey member of the society. A total of 565 euros was raised during the evening.

Although our invited guests were unable to make the evening, it was a great success and the meal was excellent. A number of photos taken by members Jan Floyd and Margaret Gilbey will be posted on the website shortly, our thanks to them for this.
