Ivie Davies With The Trophy

It took 92 matches to find the winners of the first ever Ryder Cup style team event to be held at La Serena Golf, Los Alcázares. In the end, the European Team prevailed to take the inaugural trophy by 49.5 points to 42.5 but after of a long weekend of entertaining Golf, both Team Captains agreed that the real winner was the game of Golf and the tremendous atmosphere created by all the players.

Golfers from Spain, Germany, Scandanavia, the UK & Ireland enjoyed what many local players described as one of the best amateur events to be held in the region with all the matches being played over a single weekend at La Serena Golf, one of the most challenging courses in the region. The Los Alcázares golf course was an ideal venue for the match play event as players had to tackle a technically demanding Golf course, where good play can be rewarded but where mistakes can ultimately prove costly. In total, there were three matches played, the Fourballs and Foursomes were played on Saturday followed by the Singles on Sunday.

The Fourballs got off to an even start with both Spain and Europe up in two and all square in two, as the matches unfolded the European Team were looking very strong, moving to a 4 point lead with some notable wins. As the morning session came to an end, Europe held a comfortable 13-10 lead.  The players enjoyed a break for lunch and the excellent hospitality laid on by La Serena in the Clubhouse with golfers taking the time to chat and make new aquaintances.

The afternoon session saw many of the same pairings from the morning Fourballs, with Spain trying to get some points on the board early. Again it remained quite even until the European Team managed to turn a number of matches in their favour. Despite their best efforts, the Spanish Team fell further behind losing the afternoon Foursomes 10.5-12.5. After Day One Spain had it all to do, trailing Europe 20.5 to 25.5.

8am on Sunday morning and both teams were back at La Serena keen to get out on the course, wearing their new team colours. With 46 points to play for, the Spanish Team were still confident despite Europe’s 5 point overnight lead.  The singles proved to be an exciting climax with many matches swinging one way then the other. In the end the European Team again came out on top winning the Singles with a narrow 22 points to 24 victory.  After an entertaining and enjoyable weekend, all the players and organisers gathered on the terrace for the prize giving ceremony, followed by free food and drinks. It was clear by the reaction of the players and the gathering family and friends that the event had proved a great success, both on and off the golf course.   With Ivie Davies collecting the impressive Trophy on behalf of the winning European Team, players were already praising the organisation by La Serena Golf and talking about next years event.  For more information on this event please visit www.clubmurcia.com
